Ian is a leader of the Bar throughout Australia in the fields of employment and industrial law, and work health and safety.

He appears regularly in the High Court, the Federal Court, the Fair Work Commission, and in State Supreme Courts.

He has been listed by Chambers and Partners in Band One in Employment for the last 10 years.

He has been involved as counsel in many of the most significant cases in this area, including leading authorities on issues such as casual employment, redundancy and the ordinary and customary turnover of labour, general protections, intractable bargaining, ‘same job, same pay’, and the interpretation of awards and enterprise agreements.

He is an author of The Modern Contract of Employment, the leading Australian text on the law of employment law, which is now in its third edition.
